Is level testing required? / What is the level testing process?

Level testing is NOT required to take classes. It is for attendees who feel they have a solid grasp of Lindy Hop and wish to attempt to test into one of the upper tracks. (Due to the space constraints of the venue, spots in the upper tracks are limited, and level placement is relative to the level of attendees who participate in level testing. We have space for roughly the top 15 percent of attendees in gold track and the top 30 percent of attendees in sliver track.)

There will be 3 class “tracks”. Level testing is OPTIONAL for attendees, but it is required for silver and gold track classes and will take place Friday at 7:30pm sharp at Sons of Hermann Hall in the “Bowling Alley.” If you want to level test, don’t be late!! There will be a SMALL level testing Saturday morning at 9:30 am at Sammons Center, but most spots will be taken. We HIGHLY encourage you to test on Friday!

Expectations for being considered for silver or gold tracks:

You must demonstrate solid swingouts, circles, basic turns, and transitioning through movements seamlessly. We are looking for well-executed basics at a variety of tempos, a comfortable pulse and clear connection, and the ability to lead or follow Lindy Hop well with various partners. While there is no explicit requirement for how long you’ve been dancing, most people who test into silver or gold track will have been Lindy Hopping for at least a few years.

Can I volunteer at BDL?

Volunteer slots are limited, and we encourage you to register online ASAP (registration opens 3/14). On the online registration form, you can indicate that you are interested in volunteering, and the BDL Volunteer Coordinator will contact you with more information about scheduling. We reimburse volunteers $15 per hourlong shift worked AFTER the event.

I’m from out of town. Where should I stay during BDL?

If you’d like to book a hotel, we encourage you to do so as early as possible to be sure you’ll have a place to stay.

Here is a map of the venues and local area. If you’d like to try to find housing with a local dancer, feel free to post on our event page on Facebook to see if you can find someone who might have space for you!

When does online registration close?

Online registration closes July 12th whenever our web admin gets around to it…likely early afternoon. We recommend registering before July 12th, or you’ll be left hoping we have passes remaining to sell at the door during the event!

What if I need housing OR what if I can offer housing?

Please go to the Facebook event for Big D Lindy 2026 and connect with each other in the comments section of the housing post. If you are NOT on Facebook but want to post there you may email us at dsds-board-of-directors@dsds.org and we will post on your behalf.

What are the options for lunch Saturday and Sunday?

This year, we will provide a small space on the second floor for you to eat lunch if you'd prefer to stay at the venue rather than go out. Feel free to order delivery (please meet the delivery person downstairs at the front door) or pack a lunch (we will NOT have fridge space available).

What is the plan for dinner Saturday? Can I eat at the venue?

Our venue (Sammons Center for the Arts) will be closed from 5:30-7:30 pm between classes and the evening dance.

Do you offer refunds?

No, once you have registered and paid, there are no refunds. However, you are welcome to sell your pass privately and inform us of the purchaser's details via email (see below).
